So everyday I have been posting something on my FB wall about my experences with fasting for the first time. I am sure everyone is getting sick of it but I really like doing it, so I figure if I do it here then no one will be put out.  I am going to copy and paste the ones I have posted so far along with any comments, then we will go from there.

IF you want to know more about what Ramadan, you can check Wikipedia I do not think everything on there is right but its a start if you want more information please feel free to ask me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramadan

I was asked a few questions on FB and wanted to transfer them over here. I am not a scholar but I will do my best to give my understanding if something I post is wrong please let me know.

Q-how long do you have to fast for..and also why are you fasting,, and does every one in the family fast or just you.

A-We fast from sun up to sun down the whole month of Ramadan(lunar calendar). We fast because God told us too. As far as who should fast it says that anyone who is healthy, above the age of puberty, and sane of mind. There is allot of different opinion about things like pregnancy and stuff. I have heard that people start their kids out young but that is not necessary.

Day 8 No Fasting sorry

I want to let everyone know that tomorrow there will not be a blot about fasting because I am not fasting tomorrow due to a dentist apt to get a broken tooth fixed. I have researched as much as I could about the issue and I feel that it is just better to make up the day next month rather then to have to face Allah and say I thought it was ok to fast and get my teeth done. No I am not going to change the apt it took me too long to get this apt.

So I hate going to the dentist!!! It takes me twice the amount of nummbing shots as most people so I feel more of the work they do cause it starts wearing off faster too!! Oh joy !!!

Day 7

I got up late only had enough time to eat a banana, two pieces of toast and drink a cup of coffee. And two big glasses of water. I think my fasting is harder on my hubby then it is on me he is so grumpy lately!!

Sanah Suleiman Hassan Girl you did better than me lol. I fell asleep around 3:30 am and of course that time i dont really feel like eating , then wake up like 10 minutes after its time to stop eating lol..inshallah it will get easier on the both of you and everyone else as well :)

Well I have made it until 6pm today so far!! what is for Iftar tonight. Left overs!!! yes I have tons of left overs. Well for me and Nyla hubby will just have to have kabab.

Day 1

I think the last two hour was the hardest standing near the hot stove!!! But the chicken soup/stew was really good!! I also made pharata(fried bread), smoothies made with blueberry, strawberry and pineapples yumm!! And a cheese cake made from scratch.

Mary Catherine Hoffman Hey girl, how was your first day of Ramadan? Saw your posts - I'm proud of you!!!! Keep it up!

Sanah Suleiman Hassan and Rebecca Bauer like this.

Kema Johnson nice!!!!...have you tried katayef? It is a traditonal arabic ramadan dessert...I love it, it's kind of like a pancake stuffed with nuts or cheese and then fried and dipped in syrup. Delish! I forgot to get lemon juice from the store, so I didn't get to make it last night....insha'allah I can have some today.

Jojo email me the recipe I have never tried it.

Sanah Suleiman Hassan Omg Jo its yummy!!!! lol. you should try it!

Jojo you should make it for me Sanah!!

Jojo so far not doing as well as yesterday woke up later then I should have, got to eat just barely before the athan. went back to sleep and woke up with a cold.

Jojo thank you how is yous going sorry I am whinny today.

Mary Catherine Hoffman Oh, sorry u aren't feeling well. I had a cold during Ramadan last year. Maybe it is just some stuffiness, not a full-blown cold. Nap when Nyla naps, baby yourself a little and insha'Allah you will be feeling better in a day or two

Jojo the drainage is the worst part one side wants to run the other is going down my throat.

Theresa McClinton drink plenty of water girly! :) so proud of you chika!! you are doing amazing!

Jojo thank you I did get one glass but wish I had gotten up earlier

Theresa McClinton i get up at 3:30. then i get a half hour to sit around and sip my coffee before i have to start getting breakfast ready. :)

Jojo thats a good Idea but Nyla was up until 12:30-12:45 lastnight I was too tired to get up.

Theresa McClinton yeah i went to bed at 12 midnight too :/

Day 2

We(kids) and I got up later. I will have the timing thing down by the time they go back to their mom's on Friday. I made eggs, Fatima made the toast, and Hamza got the water and juice for each of us. I also had a cup of coffee. problem is I woke up later with what feels like a cold. But its 11:30am and I have not let that break my fast !!!

Kema Johnson yeah...that's better for you, just wait until iftar to take some medicine...and tomorrow take it at suhoor.

Jojo yes mama if Nyla will just go to bed earlier tonight so I can get better sleep then I think things will be better tomorrow she didnt go to bed until after 12 lastnight then she was up a few times.

Mary Catherine Hoffman Nurah told me you were worried about using your inhaler. Don't worry! It doesn't break your fast.

Islam Question and Answer - Why isn’t the puffer for asthma regarded as breaking the fast?

islamqa.com
The puffer is a container in which there is a liquid medicine composed of three things: chemical substances (medical preparation), water and oxygen.

Theresa McClinton and Jeri Milburn like this.

Jojo thank you so much that might make me feel better

Jojo Mary thank you so much for that link I have been stuck on that site every since there is so much information.

Mary Catherine Hoffman I know girl, I love it. Any time I have a question, I look there first.

Day 3

I made it through the day I guess with Allah's wish. It seemed like when ever I just couldn't take my mouth being so dry it was time for wadu and I got to moist it. I love doing wadu!!!! its the best thing in the world.

Sam InPowell likes this.

Abigail Stone Venable wadu you do for wadu? :P sorry, bad joke, but I have to ask.

Jojo Lol its how we clean ourselves before we pray. You wash your hands three times, then you put water in you mouth and spit it out also three times then you wash your face, head, ears, and neck. Then you wash your arm upto the elbow. And last you wash your feet three times. Always starting with your rightside. And since we pray 5 times a day its really never too long before you get to do wadu!!!!

Abigail Stone Venable well that's nice for when you're fasting, makes it more bearable!

Jojo Yes God built in blessing every where we just need to know to look at them that way! I never really liked doing wadu before, then yesterday I figured it out.

Barbara McLane this sounds interesting, not to sound dence though.. what religion are you, and what is the fasting for?? I like to learn about religions :-) :::HUGS::: you are doing great!! and enjoy your wadu.

Jojo On Wed the month of Ramadan started this is based on the lunar calendar. For the whole month we fast. This means from sun up to sun down we do not eat or drink anything. I am a Muslim, I converted about 4 years ago. We fast because God told us to, so that we will learn what it is like to feel hunger like the poor. It also teaches us patience, and allot of other things. And by doing this we attain piety. If you want more information i would be happy to point you in the right direction of some websites. You really have to be careful a lot of the websites out there are not true Islam.

Barbara McLane cool thank you :-)

Day 6

10:30am and I am having a very hard time every where there is food.

Laura Swafford Stoltz i wish you peace in your fast/feast of ramadan. :) you can do it!

Kerry Brodbeck Bellman think of bugs crawling in the food it always helps me lose my apetite for hours

Becky Gronquist you will make it! blessings to you!

Tiana M. Holland Please don't tell me you haven't been eating for 6 days?!

Jojo Tee its only sun up to sun down trust me i make up for it after the sun goes down.

Tiana M. Holland Oh, ok good! Lol!

got better in the after noon. Nye and I took a long nap. I woke up and I wasn't even hungry. Hubby took us out to hometown buffet for dinner. Yummy.

Rebecca Bauer and Tiana M. Holland like this.

Sanah Suleiman Hassan Good Job Jo! Your doing great!!

Jojo thanks Sanah it is getting easier. Except once hubby comes home in the evening he is used to having his dinner right away and he has chosen to wait for me. Which makes him cranky.

Anne 'Sowdal' Bowes Praying for you during this time...you are doing amazing :) Can ask what the kids do during Ramadan, maybe a silly question but is there a certain age at which they start to participate...

I think this is such an amazing thing - not only to focus on your faith and renew but to understand what it is like for most people in this world who don't have the basic necessities of life...food and water

Jojo Thank you Anne!! I think its a family thing as to what age the kids start. I was at a class last week were the speaker was saying he knew of a child as young as 4 who would fast from breakfast to lunch and then from lunch to dinner. I think that is really cool way to get them to start. This would mean no snacks or drinks between meals. I wish I had tried that first before jumping in with both feet. But you know what I have had three and a half years to get my feet used to the idea.

Day 5

Was Easter(easier) except when hubby and baby kept eating all day!

Sanah Suleiman Hassan easter, huh?

Jojo LOLI ment easier

Jojo I guess i didn't get enought for breakfast today

Theresa McClinton you know what jo, thats how it always is. even though your fasting, you still got to feed the fam, and it can be tough. But if you set your mind to just breeze through the day, not notice, then you generally don't notice as much. you are doing great hun. good for you! :)

Day 4

Today I have also seen the same thing. Although I have found myself allot more physical today and needing it more often. I know its only ..... amount of time until I do wadu again. And with it being 3pm that is only 5 more hours until we all break fast at Nurah's.

Sam InPowell likes this.

Jojo I know I am alot more grumpy today too even though I am trying not to fight too much!!! But if Nyla touches one more thing she knows she isn't supposed too touch then she is going to find out what a grizzly is like!

Day 4 went very well I think the long nap that Nyla and I took from like 3 to 7 helpped alot. The Iftar at Nurahs was so wonderful. Food was yummy, And the big plate of dessart made fasting all day very worth it!! It was very nice to be around all my wonderful friends and I cant wait for the next Iftar!!

Sanah Suleiman Hassan, Mary Catherine Hoffman and Ike Engel like this.

Ike Engel Next week is at your place rite?

Theresa McClinton yay! im so glad you had a great time!!! :) and you are doing such a great job fasting masha'allah. we are all so proud of u girl.

Jojo Ike yes on the 21st at our house.

Jojo Nurah we always enjoy coming to your house. I was so full this morning I could barely eat breakfast.

Mary Catherine Hoffman I know what you mean Jolena! Younes and I both ate too much, and then went to taraweeh...omg, I was kinda uncomfortable, lol.

Jojo LOL I have fish ready for the oven I am going to put it in around 8 then it will be just coming out when the athan goes off. Poor little Nyla is sick again she has a high fever. I dont understand it. She was fine yesterday. hubby just took her to the golden arches for some fries. Hope she will eat them she hasnt taken anything all day.

Mary Catherine Hoffman Poor baby. Hope she feels better soon, inshallah.

Ike Engel Awh.. Hope she feels better soon!

Ramadan Day 1

We(me and the older kids) Got up ate said fajir then Fatima and I went back to bed while Hamza played Xbox. Big pot of Chicken is on the stove for Iftar. Its Dhurh kids have it done I am next. Yeah first day is half over and I am doing great!!! Come on 8:35pm and maghrib!!!!! My Chicken is smelling so good!!

Shannon Halfhill, Mary Catherine Hoffman, Margaret Ostervold and 7 others like this.

Sanah Suleiman Hassan keep it up hun!!

Ike Engel Great job Jo!! I still don't know what's for Iftar.. It's probly either fish or lentil..waitin on Rob to respond..(I like him to choose his Iftar meal to make him looking forward to Iftar)..I'm good either way!

Asma Jafri Awww good job Jo!! I know it's long but iA hopefully it'll get easier! Wish I could try your pot of chicken hehe sounds good!

Jojo Thank you everyone its now 3:15 and I am still good!! First time fasting I am kicking Satan's butt!!!!

Jojo ‎5 more hours!!!

Shannon Halfhill Good job! I got through my day too Alhumdulillah!

Jojo wish I could sleep all day I am feeling horrible today

Shannon Halfhill oh no....well, after day 3 it gets better and easier. IsA u will do ok....

Jojo ‎3:30 and as long as I dont get up off the couch I am fine.

Shannon Halfhill lol..I know...I'm so tired and weak and hungry! geez! But I have to take Kylan to football practice

Jojo OMG what time is it over are you going to take something with you to break your fast? its funny cause so many days I don't eat until Rehman gets home but I have my coffee all day and that is what I am missing the most. I can deal with the hunger but I am finding it hard to feed Nyla with out getting something for me. Same food that was in the house last week when I couldn't find anything I wanted to eat but I sure wouldnt mind some of his cookies now. Or the cheese puffs for the baby!!
